I've begun writing a fantasy series which highlights the normalcy of chronic illness. Every child and adult, alike, needs a good fictional character to look to in times of trouble. I have spent so many years with my body sick in the real world and my mind escaping to a fictional world. Daydreaming, reading, and writing are all coping mechanisms that I have found to be particularly helpful when faced with the difficult trials of being chronically ill. That said, most fairy tales are filled with healthy characters that achieve all their dreams. I want to remove the stigma that disabled persons are "less than". Whether you are healthy or sick, we are all just people trying to live.
We have hopes. We have dreams. We can achieve great bounds beyond our wildest visions.
This series, written under the pen name Elizabeth Cole as a tribute to my recently deceased grandmothers, will serve as a testament to the strong will and character that they both instilled in our family. The characters will be far from perfect. They will be sick and suffer. They will experience trauma and heal ungracefully. They will push away what is good for them and crave things that bring them farther down. All of this will happen and, yet, they will persevere! They will live and laugh. They will triumph and make great strides. They will dream and then see those plans come about. And above all, they will love and love widely - unconditionally and unapologetically.
