Halloween is a wonderfully fun way to celebrate the beginning of the winter season, but why do we observe this interesting holiday? Discover the origin of our October festivities. Happy Halloween readers! What does Halloween mean to you? To me, Halloween is a time for family fun. Regardless of the party that I attend, I usually wear my RenFest maiden costume. If you are familiar with the Texas Renaissance Festival, you probably know how expensive period costumes can get. Since I only go to RenFest once or twice per year, usually during Highland Fling and Celtic Christmas, I have to get its money's worth ;) during Halloween. If the party is not scheduled on All Hallows' Eve, I also love to sit on the driveway and greet trick-or-treaters. Something about teeny-tikes all dressed up as their favorite characters really brings joy to my heart! *The RenFest photo is somewhat poor as it is a snapshot of a video. Do you attend costume parties or get dressed up to go trick-or-treating? These are only a couple of the ways that we have learned, over the years, to celebrate the night of Halloween; but what does "Halloween" even mean? Some people still refer to the holiday as All Hallows' Eve, which is a time originally meant to honor the Celtic festival of Samhain. However, over time, the holiday has become more of a secular event performed within communities. The History Channel created a fine article called "History of Halloween" that efficiently sums up the beginnings of our traditionally accepted Halloween. I hope that you enjoy learning more about the origin of this late-October holiday. For more entertaining Halloween posts, click on the buttons bellow. Boo! We want to hear from you!
